Action Learning

The core thrust of management and leadership development should be based on the principals of action learning. This requires that learning should not take place in isolation of reality but that concepts studied should be related to the Learner’s working environment. Action learning provides a practical cognitive framework in which the student can apply concepts learned to daily management activities within their company. Assessment procedures are based on the ability of the individual to practically apply the concepts, tools and skills learned in the programme to the work environment:

  • Identifying key data needed to analyse situations;
  • Defining problems and opportunities;
  • Formulating solutions and comparing options;
  • Translating solutions into action recommendations;
  • Articulating and defending their positions among colleagues; and
  • Listening to others and adapting their own positions.

The emphasis is on high participation in the workshops, intensive group analysis and discussion of real-life cases and examples, involving practical management decision-making. The case study method is often used to provide intensive study and discussion of current real-world situations. Using the case study method is extremely valuable because it takes advantage of the common pool and diversity of experience found in the participants and the faculty leader. Lectures and discussions will give additional opportunities for open dialogue with the faculty and other attendees.

Group action learning sessions are supported with material for self-study and research; the priority throughout is on discussion and the exchange of ideas. The GIMT approach provides a practical, innovative, lively and stimulating blend of learning.

Link to Strategy

Management and leadership development should be linked to the strategic intent of the corporation. As a strategic initiative, management development can be instrumental in bringing about change and creating a common language for managers and staff. Issues relating to the vision, mission and strategy of the company are integrated into the programme delivery.

The GIMT range of programmes is designed to enhance the ability of your organisation’s leaders and managers to think strategically about the key areas of their stakeholder partnerships and prepares them to interact in a co-operative and effective manner. Strategy therefore provides the context for participant’s development.Issues relating to the vision, mission and strategy of the company are integrated into training material.
